That changed in 2019 with the release of Pixel 3a and 3a XL. They are the first middlemen in the line, and they value camera quality, of course. Since then it has been assumed that the search giant would use the same strategy with Pixel 4, which would win months later simple brothers.
The first evidence of these releases came from Android AOSP and was fished by XDA Developers. The latest firmware for Google flagships mentions three new devices, possible variants of Pixel 4a.
They are: Sunfish, Redfin and Bramble, and the last two are noteworthy for mentioning Qualcomm’s So72 SM7250, which is nothing more than Snapdragon 765.
This is important because it is a Qualcomm chipset for intermediate phones, but with 5G capabilities. If Google did bring these devices to life, then the search giant would eventually have a 5G smartphone. The irony of this is that the more robust Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL do not support fifth-generation networks, because the company at the time rated the technology as still very immature.
If this is confirmed, the Pixel 4 could put another flop on its list, which already has some items such as poor battery performance and nothing extraordinary in terms of photography.
On the other hand, a survey has already pointed out that by 2020 up to 20% of devices for the intermediate market should have 5G. It’s no surprise that in the last few years mid-range has been receiving premium features, so they get the implementation of fifth-generation networks next to the flagships is not that new.
Last year the Pixel 3a and 3a XL were made official on Google I / O in May. We can estimate that Google should follow a similar schedule in 2020 if it is to bring to life leaner brothers for Pixel 4.
