The next standard, 802.11ax, will be called Wi-Fi 6.
The Wi-Fi Alliance, the consortium that evaluates and decides on everything related to the precious wireless technology, will discard the 802.11 denomination to refer to connection standards. Instead, you are going to choose a simpler name that more consumers can remember or understand: Wi-Fi 5 . That is to say, if we have an 802.11ac router, we have a Wi-Fi router 5. In the same way, the 802.11n standard is now known as Wi-Fi 4 and 802.11ax, Wi-Fi 6.
According to Edgar Figueroa, president of the consortium, “for almost two decades, Wi-Fi users have found technical names to determine the compatibility of their devices.” With the arrival of Wi-Fi 6, the consortium launches a new system of names that will help industry and users to more easily understand the compatibilities and functionalities of their connectivity. Only the designation changes, not the technology. Obviously, where this new nomenclature will be most noticeable will be in the new devices, from that Wi-Fi 6 that will arrive in 2019.
