Now, another indication of that has just surfaced on the internet, reinforcing that the processor codenamed Whitechapel will in fact be for a Google phone.
The XDA Developers website spotted a comment in an AOSP discussion, which speaks publicly about the name Whitechapel as part of a URL in the context of a “P21” device, along with the GS101 tag, which was also previously linked to this processor.
Although there is no concrete information about the component or the cell phone on which it will be installed, this corroborates Google’s future plans for its customized silicon, which may be revealed soon.
Will the new processor be really powerful?
Google is expected to challenge the next iPhone by creating its own chipset to equip the future Pixel 6. The component is codenamed Whitechapel, developed by Samsung – the two companies had already signed an agreement since the middle of last year.
According to information released by the 9to5Google website, the new mobile platform would be associated with other codenames, such as “Raven” and “Oriole”. At least one of them would be the search giant’s next cell phone.
If the new report is correct, Google could dispense with its current dependence on Qualcomm. In the previous generation, the company’s option was for an intermediate chip – Snapdragon 765 – and not a top-of-the-line chip, as it was before, probably for reasons of high costs.
With the production of its own chipsets, the Mountain View company would have an open path to take an Apple-like approach with its hardware. That is, the components could also reach future Chromebooks.
Older rumors about the Google chip signaled a strong appeal to machine learning, with a coprocessor to enhance Google Assistant. In addition, it would show the integrated operation of hardware and software on a smartphone with the Android system.
It is important to note that, to date, there is no confirmation of any plan for the company’s custom chips for the Pixel 6 line.
