No plan B: Huawei’s Hongmeng OS is not an alternative to Android, reveals executive

Since the beginning of Huawei’s problems with the US government, which has led the company to be boycotted by several companies, including by Google, without much talk about an alternative to the mobile operating system of the search giant.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen a lot of articles on Hongmeng OS (or Ark OS ), but it’s not what many of us thought it was – a competitor or alternative to Android.

In a recent interview, Liang Hua, the company’s executive, commented that Huawei still prefers Google’s platform than it uses itself, explaining the following:

Hongmeng OS was primarily developed for IoT devices to help reduce latency. In terms of smartphones, we are still using Android and its ecosystem as the “first choice”.

We have not yet decided whether Hongmeng OS will be able to be developed as an operating system for smartphones in the future.

The revelation above was given during a press conference held this Friday (12) in Shenzhen, China.

In other words, Huawei does not have a “B plan” in case of Google actually revoke permission to use its system and services, which can put the brand in a delicate position.

Currently, the restrictions against Huawei in the US have been softened, but the brand is still on the “blacklist”, requiring special permissions to negotiate with US companies because of its alleged “threat to national security.”
