Apple launches open source project to assist password management applications

Apple today announced the availability of an open-source project with features that promise to help password management applications deliver a better user experience. In principle, three resources are available for implementation, based on what is offered by iCloud Keychain, the manufacturer’s own manager.

The first one is Password Rules, or “Password Rules”, in free translation, which defines rules for generating passwords in order to prevent a sequence that is not compatible with the website or service in question being generated. There are also Websites with Shared Credential Backend, or “Websites with Shared Credential Backend”, to offer login for relevant accounts on sites that have the same credential system.

Finally, Change Password URLs, or “password change URLs”, assist managers in directing users directly to links to modify their passwords, encouraging them to adopt strong passwords generated by applications. Access and use of codes is free, and modifications and questions are encouraged.

The novelty comes at an interesting time, since Dropbox today launched, in closed beta, its Passwords, password management application for Android and iOS that promises to hit headlines with big names like LastPass and Dashlane. Considering its current stage, we can see the service adopt the features made available by Apple in a future update.

It is worth remembering that the Cupertino giant launched its first public beta of the iPadOS13.5.5 last week. The new version of the system seems to focus on small improvements but has already started tests of brightness control with the keyboard launched for the new generation of iPad Pro.
