The “DNS server does not respond” in Windows 10, 8, 7. What should I do and how to fix it?

One of the most common errors associated with connecting to the Internet in Windows is the error: “The DNS server is not responding.” At the same time, access to the Internet is lost. The connection icon is likely to be a yellow triangle, and in the browser, when you try to open the site, you will most likely see an error “Can not find the DNS address”, “err name not resolved”, or something like that. This problem is caused by a failure in the DNS server, which is responsible for the redirected IP addresses to the domain. If we talk about the causes of this error, then the culprit can be either the computer itself, or the router, or equipment on the side of the provider.

The error “DNS-server does not respond” appears as a result of diagnostics of Windows networks. Running diagnostics is easy. Simply right-click on the Internet connection icon, and select “Diagnose problems”.

Sometimes, an error may appear: “The computer settings are configured correctly, but the device or resource (DNS server) is not responding.”

Here such errors. If you do not know what to do, then now we will consider some effective tips that should help get rid of these errors. As a result, the Internet on your computer will work, and the sites will start to open. Solutions will be the same for Windows 10, Windows 8, and Windows 7.

How to fix the error “DNS server is not responding”?

For starters, I advise you to perform a few simple solutions. There is a chance that they will help, and you do not have to deal with more complex settings.

  • If you have an Internet connection through a router, or a modem (via Wi-Fi or cable) , and you see a “DNS server is not responding” error, then try simply to restart the router. Turn off the power of the router for about a minute, and turn it back on. It does not matter what your router, TP-Link, D-link, ASUS, or something else.
  • Restart your computer or laptop. In this case, it does not matter if the Internet goes through a router, or by cable directly from the provider. Just restart.
  • If the Internet is connected through a router, then check if the Internet is working on other devices. Is there an error with the response of the DNS server.
  • When connected through a router, if possible, you can connect the Internet directly to your computer. For check.
  • Try to remember, then there was a DNS error and problems with access to the Internet. Maybe after changing some settings, or installing programs.

If these tips did not help, then try to apply solutions, which I’ll write about below.

Check the DNS Client service

Before I change anything, I recommend seeing if the “DNS-client” service is working. Press the keyboard shortcut Win + R. In the window that appears, enter the services.msc command, and click Ok.

In the new window, look for the service “DNS-client”, click on it with the right mouse button, and select “Properties.”

The startup type must be “Automatic”. And if you have the “Start” button will be active, then click on it. Next: “Apply” and “Ok”.

If the service has been disabled, and you turned it on, then after restarting the computer the Internet should earn.

Change DNS server settings in connection properties

Next, we will check the DNS server settings in the connection properties through which the computer is connected to the Internet. If some addresses are registered there, then you can try to set automatic receipt, or register DNS addresses from Google. This method very often allows you to get rid of the error “DNS server does not respond.”

We need to open a window with all the connections. To do this, you can right-click the Internet connection icon, and select “Network Management Center …”. Next, go to the “Change the parameters of the adapter.”

Then right-click on the connection through which you are connected to the Internet (to the router) , and select “Properties”. If the connection is via Wi-Fi, then this connection is “Wireless Network”, if by cable, then “Ethernet” (Local Area Connection).Network-Connections-menu

At me, for example, a problem with DNS at the connection on a Wi-Fi network through a router.

In the new window, select “IP version 4 (TCP / IPv4)”, and click “Properties.” If you have a DNS server registered in a new window, you can try to set automatic addresses and check the connection to the Internet after restarting the computer.IPV4-Properties-option

But most often helps the following: put the switch next to “Use the following DNS server addresses,” and write DNS from Google :

Click “Ok” and restart the computer.Google-DNS-Server-Addresses-1

This solution helps very often. If you have a problem with getting DNS on all devices that are connected through one router, then these addresses can be registered in the settings of the router, then they will be applied to all devices. As a rule, you can do this in your router settings, in the “Internet” section, or “WAN”. Where are the settings for connecting to the provider?

For an example, I’ll show you how to do this on a TP-Link router :

Do not forget to save the settings.

Clear DNS cache and other network settings

You just need to run the command line, and in turn, execute several commands that clean up the DNS address cache and other network settings. This method is suitable for both Windows 10 and Windows 7 (8).

The command line should be run as administrator. If you have Windows 10, just right-click on the start menu, and select “Command Prompt (Administrator).” In Windows 7, you can type “cmd” in the search, right-click on “cmd” in the search results, and select “Run as administrator”.Commands-for-ipconfig-in-Command-Prompt

In turn, we copy and execute the following commands:

ipconfig / flushdns

ipconfig / registerdns

ipconfig / renew

ipconfig / release

Like this:

In Windows 10, you can also try to reset the network settings. It’s almost the same.

After that, restart the computer.

What if I can not fix the error?

If you did everything right, but Windows still writes that the DNS server does not respond, then I have a couple more tips:

  • Try temporarily to completely disable the antivirus, or the built-in firewall (web antivirus, firewall) .
  • If you can not fix this mistake in any way, then call in support of your Internet provider. It is not uncommon for DNS problems to be their fault.

Be sure to write if you succeed in getting rid of this error. Write what method helped. Maybe you have some other solution working, which is not in the article. Well, leave your feedback in the comments.

  1. After going through your article I cleared the DNS cache and looked after other network settings and did according to this article. It worked out for me.
