To beat the competition: WhatsApp announces animated stickers, use of QR Codes and more

Despite being one of the most used messaging apps worldwide, WhatsApp was still lagging behind features when compared to its competitors. The company wants to change that, and today announced a series of news that will come to the application in the coming weeks.

Now available to beta users, animated stickers are a “more fun and expressive way” to communicate. The feature should allow users to view and save stickers sent by contacts, add packages developed in third-party applications or even download directly from the WhatsApp store.

Another great novelty is the use of QR Codes to add a contact, just scan your code to save it in your phonebook, ending the old process of entering the phone number. The most interesting thing, however, is the implementation of the dark mode in WhatsApp Web and the desktop application, which had already reached smartphones in early March.

With the increase in demand for video calls, due to COVID-19, the application will also receive improvements related to group calls. Users can now create calls with up to 8 participants and focus on one by pressing and holding the image of who will be highlighted. In addition, a new icon will allow the connection to be made more easily.

Finally, even those using simpler cell phones should benefit from new features. Feature phone users equipped with KaiOS will receive support for status, messages, photos, and videos that disappear 24 hours after being published.

Remember that rivals of WhatsApp also received the news in recent days. Telegram gained support for animated photos, greater flexibility in its chat folders, and even a video editor, while Viber provided iOS users with a complete GIF creation and editing tool.
