Smartphone lifeguards! Galaxy S8 saves divers in the Philippines thanks to IP68

When talking about smartphone certifications, such as water and dust resistance, the idea is to protect the device from any risks, such as a possible drop in a pool or private, for example, that would not result in harm to the user. But what if this resource were capable of something even bigger, like saving lives?

This is what happened in Cebu province in the Philippines when a Samsung Galaxy S8, launched in 2017, helped save the lives of 20 people.

A boat carrying 16 foreign divers and four other Filipinos fell into the waters of the city of Bogo. Everything seemed to be heading for a tragedy but, 30 minutes after the accident, they asked for help and shared the GPS location on the smartphone, and managed to be rescued. The Galaxy S8 belongs to the Canadian Jim Emdee.

This story comes just days after the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission accused Samsung of lying about the water-resistance of its smartphones.

The Samsung Electronics venue celebrated the rescue of the crew and took the opportunity to remind users about the feature Send SOS message present on Galaxy smartphones. When enabled, users can press the power button three times quickly to send a distress message to emergency contacts. To activate, you need to access Advanced Settings / Features / Send SOS message.

We were happy to know that the passengers are safe and that a Samsung phone was useful in the rescue effort. We will continue to work to produce devices that will help users when they find themselves in dire situations. ”
James Jung, director of Samsung Electronics Philippines

Samsung also advises customers to keep GPS powered on while traveling alone or in remote areas. The Canadian diver made a point of thanking the team of Samsung for the resource to save his life.

I really hope my thanks come to the engineering team as honestly it really saved us all. Only my S8 was able to connect and worked all the way until we hit the ground. He stayed alive for much longer than I imagined, and really made a difference. ”
Jim Emdee, survivor of the crash in the Philippines
