Where next for the iPad Pro?

It’s been 12 months since the unveiling of new iPad Pro models in October 2018. Complete with all-screen design, Face ID and USB-C, and we’re eagerly looking ahead to the next generation.

What can we expect from the new iPad Pro models if one is released in 2019?

In this article, we discuss their release date, specs and new features including:

  • A new ‘time-of-flight’ camera
  • mini LED screen
  • Updated processor

We also discuss what the pre-pro iPads are likely to cost and when the iPad Pro will gain 5G connectivity.

Release date:

When will the new iPad Pro come out?

So far in 2019 Apple has launched the iPad Air, iPad mini and a new 10.2 iPad. Maybe you think that the new iPad Pro will surely follow before the end of 2019.

An iPad Pro launch in the October 2019 timeframe wouldn’t be a surprise: Apple has released at least one new iPad Pro model per year since 2015. Here are the launch dates so far:

  • Nov 2015: iPad Pro 12.9in (1st gen)
  • iPad Pro 9.7in: Mar 2016
  • Jun 2017: iPad Pro 12.9in (2nd gen)
  • iPad Pro 10.5in: Jun 2017
  • Nov 2018: iPad Pro 12.9in (3rd gen)
  • iPad Pro 11in: Nov 2018

A Bloomberg report on 22 August 2019 claimed its sources indicated that the new iPad Pro will launch before the end of 2019. The Bloomberg report stated that: “Coming in 2019: refreshed versions of the iPad Pro with upgraded cameras and faster chips”. That report also mentioned the 10.2in iPad, which launched in September 2019, so it could be assumed that the prediction that an iPad Pro would arrive alongside the 10.2in Pad was incorrect.

However, as we near the end of October an autumn/fall event is looking unlikely. There is no reason why Apple should be expected to update the iPad Pro every 12 months. A yearly update isn’t a necessity for the iPad Pro – Apple fans tend not to update their iPads as often as their iPhones, and that’s particularly so with the expensive and extremely future-proofed iPad Pro. At the same time, the company needs its premium pro devices to justify the price by having state-of-the-art components, so they won’t want to leave too long a gap.

So, should we expect a new iPad Pro in early 2020?

Back in April 2019, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (covered by the Chinese-language site Economic Daily News) was predicting that mass production of a new iPad Pro would begin between Q4 2019 and Q1 2020 – so it appears even he wasn’t convinced of an autumn/winter update. We’re not sure if Kuo was referring to Apple’s Q4 or the calendar Q4 though, Apple’s Q4 finished at the end of September 2019.

Either way, Kuo has now pushed that prediction back to the first half os 2020 anyway. Kuo published predictions in mid-October 2019 that show the iPad Pro as coming in Q1 2020.

We’d like to see new iPad Pro models in autumn 2019, but our money is on a launch in the spring or maybe not until WWDC in June 2020.

New iPad Pro price

What will the next iPad Pros cost? We predict they will start at £769/$799 – the same price as the 2018 models, although it’s possible that you may get more storage for your money.

There have been a few major price bumps in recent years but there were justifications for those: either currency fluctuations related to Brexit or the wholesale redesign of the 2018 Pro models. This time we’re hopeful that prices will stay closer to the previous generation.

However, there is one reason why prices might increase. There have been suggestions that in response to increased Chinese tarrifs Apple may hike the prices of various products. Hopefully, Apple won’t push this increase onto consumers though.

Here’s the full price list for the 2018 models.

iPad Pro 11 (Wi-Fi) (4G) iPad Pro 12.9 (Wi-Fi) (4G)
64GB £769/$799 £919/$949 £969/$999 £1,119/$1,149
256GB £919/$949 £1,069/$1,099 £1,119/$1,149 £1,269/$1,299
512GB £1,119/$1,149 £1,269/$1,299 £1,319/$1,349 £1,469/$1,499
1TB £1,519/$1,549 £1,669/$1,699 £1,719/$1,749 £1,869/$1,899

CONCLUSION:

Expect similar pricing for the next batch, although (as we will discuss later) the 64GB storage tier may disappear. If so, we would hope and expect the new entry-level presumably 128GB – to roughly match the price of the old 64GB tier.
