Google renews millionaire deal with Mozilla to remain standard Firefox search

You may not even know it, but the bar where we type web addresses in our browsers is much more important than it looks, especially for companies like Google.

Proof of this is that Mozilla, the organization responsible for developing the popular Firefox browser, has just renewed a millionaire deal with the search giant.

According to information published by the ZDNet portal, the firm (which recently announced the dismissal of 250 employees amid the Covid-19 pandemic) would have renewed the partnership until 2023, receiving between US $ 400 and US $ 450 million per year.

Official figures are expected to be announced by the end of the year, when the old agreement is due to expire. According to Mozilla spokesman Justin O’Kelly:

Mozilla’s search partnership with Google is ongoing, with Google as the default search provider in the Firefox browser in many places around the world. We recently understood that the partnership is not changing.

Apparently, the current state of Mozilla, which seems to have had its plans quite impacted by the pandemic, did not influence anything in the decision of the Mountain View giant.

But even before the pandemic, the company’s chicken egg (Firefox) is no longer as popular as before, and this can be seen in the decisions Mozilla has made lately.

In addition to laying off about 70 employees in January, the company decided to go with the development of products “that people love and want to use”, in order to try to circumvent the drop in its revenue.

Ah, we can not forget also the terrible flop of Firefox OS , a mobile platform that ended up dying even before it was born, which must also have caused a huge loss for Mozilla.

Speaking of losses, did you know that a large part of the organization’s profits come from Google and companies like Yandex and Baidu, (which pay for their search engines to be the default options in Firefox in Russia and China respectively)? After that, we may never look at that bar with the same eyes again. 😅
