A recent case in the US shared on Facebook has shown that it does work; Father and son (Bob and Gabe) were planning on spending time in the mountains – but before Gabe met his father, he received a message from Apple Watch accusing him of the fall.

According to the above publication, the watch alerted emergency contacts as soon as it detected a drop – but it also called 911.
Arriving at the appointed location, Bob was no longer there, as the security service had already taken him to the hospital and the Fire Department collected his damaged bicycle.
Gabe eventually got a new message from the clock with the updated location (in the hospital), where his father underwent several exams that fortunately failed to point out anything serious (even though he banged his head and passed out during the fall).

Now the boy advises all users to activate the fall detection system; For children under 65, the feature is disabled by default but maybe a skill in the iOS Watch app by going to Emergency SOS, as seen in the image above.
