Work with Conversation in Mail: The Mail app uses what are called Conversations to group your emails together. However, it’s quite handy when you and your recipient are emailing back and forth on the same subject. It’s just because all of those communications will be in the same thread.

However, you can do such things using conversations in the Mail app. These things like highlight, expand and collapse, or disable them all. But if the conversations in the Mail app on Mac are new to you, here’s how to work with them.

View Your Conversations

Well, Expanding your conversations is quite different. It depends on if you use the Column layout in the Mail app or not.

In the Column layout, you’ll view an arrow on the left of grouped conversations. Just tap the arrow to spread the emails.

In the default layout, you’ll view a number on the right of the message group displaying how many emails are in the conversation. Just tap that number to expand the emails.

In other layouts, you can also tap View > Expand All Conversations from the menu bar.

Highlight Conversations in Mail

For ongoing conversations, simply adding a highlight can make them stand out so you can spot them easily.

Tap View > Highlight Conversations from the menu bar.

However, if you disable the conversation view, which we’ll display you later. Also, tap Highlight Conversations, you’ll view the other emails in the thread highlight when you choose one of them.

You can also choose a different color for the highlight using the following steps.

Step 1:

Tap Mail > Preferences from the menu bar.

Step 2:

Choose the Viewing tab.

Step 3:

Under View conversations, tap the highlight color for Highlight messages with color when not grouped and select a color.

Exclude Emails from other Mailboxes in Conversations

The Mail app includes all messages grouped in conversations besides of which mailbox they reside in. But you can disable this if you want to.

Step 1:

Tap Mail > Preferences from the menu bar.

Step 2:

Choose the Viewing tab.

Step 3:

Under View conversations, unmark the box for Include related messages.

If you like to temporarily exclude related messages, you can also do this as well. However, it hides the messages until you quit/end the Mail app and reopen it.

Choose the conversation and tap View > Hide Related Messages from the menu bar.

Disable Conversation Grouping

If you think that you’re not fond of the conversation grouping you can then easily turn it off. Tap View > Organize by Conversation from the menu bar to unmark and disable it.
