Samsung announces 5G modem and Exynos 990 chip allowing 120Hz rate display

After introducing teasers and raising public expectations in recent days, Samsung just presented at the Tech Day 2019 conference in San Jose, California, its latest 7-nanometer EUV process chipset to power its next flagship smartphone.

The company also introduced the new Exynos Modem 5123, a modem that allows 5G connectivity on devices Samsung chooses to integrate it. It is one of the first manufactured in the EUV process and supports all network technologies including 2G, 3G and 4G spectrum spectra with sub-6GHz and mmWave for 5G. The maximum download speed can reach 5.1 Gbps for 5G and up to 3 Gbps using 4G.

Turning to the Exynos 990, the new chipset is most likely to replace the Exynos 9830, which would be the successor to the current chip used by Samsung in its high-performance flagships this year as the Galaxy Fold, Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy S10. The strategy of changing the nomenclature would be more to simplify the vision of the company and also of the family of chips.

The new Exynos 990 is powered by the ARM Mali-G77 GPU, the first high-performance graphics card to use Valhall architecture, which promises up to 20% energy efficiency and performance gain.

We also have eight cores working alongside the GPU: two of them customized by Samsung itself, another two high-performance Cortex-A76 and four more for Cortex-A55 energy efficiency. The Exynos 990 has two dual-NPU cores for improved facial recognition, scene detection, and other activities performed by artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Samsung Flagships with 120 Hz Display

But one of the key features is the arrival of support for 120Hz refresh rate displays with the Exynos 990, something that was not possible with previous chipsets and that due to high demand and market trend, Samsung ends up having to implement on your next devices. The company promises that the technology will allow smoother animations even on folding smartphones, which reinforces the launch of new devices and that the chip will be geared towards high performance.

The arrival of LPDDR5 memory in the set allows for an even higher level of photography than today: with the help of the dedicated image signal processor, it will be possible to capture up to six individual photos from six different sensors at one time and process them in real-time.

The Exynos 990 will allow Samsung smartphones to offer rear cameras with a maximum resolution of 108 MP.

What will be the smartphones integrated with Exynos 990?

Samsung has not said which will be the first device equipped with the new chipset, but given that the company has already introduced the Exynos 980 geared towards high-performance intermediates of the Galaxy A 2020 line a few weeks ago, it is very likely that the new chipset will be implemented on devices like the expected Galaxy S11 and the upcoming Galaxy Fold.

During the event it was confirmed that both the Exynos 5123 5G Modem and the Exynos 990 chip will go into mass production by the end of this year, and in conjunction with the information that Samsung is expected to introduce the Galaxy S11 by the end of February, the window for testing, system integration with the chipset and release is even more likely.
